Throughout our lifetime, the brain changes more than any other part of our body. Brain aging is inevitable but it may not be uniform. Though it affects everyone, its impact is different for every brain. With age, the size of the brain changes as it starts shrinking. As a result, incidence of stroke, white matter lesions, dementia and loss of memory also rise with age.

The brain starts shrinking around the age of 60 or 70 years. The frontal lobe and hippocampus–the areas that involve higher cognitive function and encoding new memories are the first to shrink.

While every brain changes with age, the mental functions change along with it. While mental decline is a fearful consequence of aging, the cognitive impairment is not inevitable. Here are some ways by which you can help maintain brain function and delay brain aging or stop premature brain aging.

Mental stimulation: Scientists have found that activities that require the brain to be alert stimulate new connections between nerve cells and help the brain to generate new cells. Hence, mentally stimulating activities like word puzzles, math problems, or even drawing, help to build up your brain.

Physical exercise: Studies have shown that using your muscles helps your mind. If you exercise regularly it can increase the number of tiny blood vessels that bring oxygen-rich blood into the brain. Exercise also increases the development of new nerve cells and the connections between brain cells. This keeps the brain more active and efficient.

Improve your diet: It is well known that good nutrition helps to keep the mind healthy. People who include lots of fruits, vegetables, fish, nuts, unsaturated oils and plant sources of proteins in their diets are less likely to develop cognitive impairment.

Improve your blood pressure: High blood pressure increases the risk of cognitive decline in old age. So modify your lifestyle to keep your pressure as low as possible. Exercise regularly, reduce stress, and eat right.

Improve your blood sugar: Diabetes is a risk factor for dementia. So try to prevent diabetes by eating right, exercising regularly, and staying healthy.

Avoid stress and anxiety: People who are stressed, anxious, depressed, sleep-deprived, or exhausted score poorly on cognitive function tests. These factors are increased risk of cognitive decline in old age.

Besides these factors, these three Ayurvedic medicines help to delay brain aging.
