Eyes are an important part of the body. They are also very sensitive and require lot of caressing. In today’s world, our eyes are constantly exposed to radiation from Computers, Mobile screens, Headlamps of vehicles and in many other ways. Our eyes are constantly strained due to these new civilizational and lifestyle habits. If you are wondering what you can do about it, the ancient medical system called Ayurveda has an answer. Triphala!

Triphala is made up of three highly nutritious and all-round rejuvenating fruits namely Amla, Haritaki and Bibitaki. All these three foods are highly rich in a plethora of vitamins.  Orally consuming Triphala is effective in reducing blood sugar levels. It also prevents and cures many diseases that occur due to vitamin C deficiency. Triphala is also a highly effective Liver and Kidney detoxifier. It has all six tastes identified in Ayurveda and also acts as a Saptadhatu nourisher. This makes Triphala an efficient Immunity booster. The nutrient rich formulations provide the following compounds to help nourish and develop the body: vitamins, carbohydrates, sodium, Gallic acid, dietary fibers, minerals, chebulinic acid, chebugalic acid and many others.

Triphala is available in the market in various forms such as powders, tablets, syrups, juices, etc.

For application on the eyes, the form that we recommend is the dry powdered version. This version of Triphala will be free from all preservatives and will require the least additions. Application of Triphala for the eyes can help keep your eyes free from stress and other related difficulties.

HOW TO USE TRIPHALA FOR EYES

  • Take a teaspoon of Triphala organic powder.
  • Mix the mixture with hot, simmering water. The heat is used to activate the active principles in Triphala.
  • Leave the mixture to cool completely.
  • Strain the mixture through a thin fabric. This will help you eliminate coarse particles from the powder that cause irritation to the eyes.
  • Take eyecups which are available in the market and fill the cups with Triphala soaked water.
  • Dip your eyes in the eyecup and blink your eyes a few times.
  • Do so for at least a minute.
  • Do not wash your eyes after this procedure. Clean the area around your eyes. The perfect time to do so is just before you sleep, so that your eyes can have plenty of rest and relaxation.

MACULAR DEGENERATION

Macular degeneration is an eye disease in which the center of the retina deteriorates and eventually results in loss of vision. Application of Triphala is effective in preventing and improving this condition.

SENILE CATARACT

Triphala is effective in curing and preventing Senile Cataract. This is a disorder which occurs in the eyes due to aging or even smoking or exposure to ultra-violet radiation.

REDUCING OXIDATIVE STRESS

Triphala is a good source of vitamin C. It also has the properties of an antioxidant, which means that it battles free radicals in the body that occur during oxidation. Triphala can help minimize any eye damage caused by oxidative stress.

ANTI – AGING EYE DISORDERS

Haritaki is one of the ingredients present in Triphala. Haritaki has several different health advantages, one of which is that it has anti-aging effects. Due to these properties, Triphala can be used for different age-related vision difficulties.

STRENGHTHENS EYE MUSCLES

Triphala strengthens the muscles of the eye, which in turn enhances the eyesight. The reason this herbal medicine is beneficial to the eyesight is that it includes either Amalaki or Amla. In Ayurvedic terms, Amla is said to enhance the Alochaka Pitta, which governs the vision. Ayurveda recognizes Amla as an eye-enhancing rasayana.

OTHER USES

Triphala can also help in redness or itchiness of the eyes, in open angle Glaucoma, in reducing eye straining and in negating inflammation in the eyes amongst others.

PRECAUTIONS

Dipping eys in Triphala water may cause irritation initially. Though it is not a cause of concern, anything unbearable should be reported to the doctor.

Please be very sure that the Triphala product you are using is free of all preservatives and chemicals which are harmful to the eyes. Please consult an Ayurvedic doctor to help you with this.

Since eyes are a very sensitive part of the body, it is always best to consult an ayurvedic doctor before you start the practice

NOTES

Oral consumption of Triphala alongside the Eye wash will help enhance benefits.

Triphala Juice can substitute the churna but most readymade juice comes with added preservatives. However, you can verify with your doctor and use other forms of Triphala to make your eyewash liquid.
