amla

Amla, also known as Indian gooseberry, is rich in vitamin C, iron and potent antioxidants. These contents make amla an indispensible ingredient of hair care. It contains loads of essential fatty acids, which strengthen hair follicles, and give strength and shine to your hair. Vitamin C improves immunity and also prevents premature greying. Amla also contains ellagic, gallic acid and carotene that improve blood circulation around the scalp, and stimulates hair growth.

Amla prevents hair loss

Although there are several reasons for hair fall, it can be prevented with proper care. While you need to know the root cause of your hair fall, and address it specifically, amla in general can prevent hair loss. Some of the major causes of hair loss can be hormonal imbalances, some medical conditions like anaemia, thyroid, incorrect diet, or autoimmune disorders such vitamin B deficiency. Hair loss can also be triggered by stress. If you massage your scalp and hair with warm amla oil at least twice a week, it can boost hair growth.

Amla has anti-inflammatory and exfoliating properties. This makes it a good mask to clean the scalp, which will facilitate faster growth of hair. This mask can be made by mixing lime juice and amla powder. Massage your scalp and hair with it, and keep it for about an hour and then wash off with normal water.

Amla stops premature greying

When the cells at the hair base called melanocytes stop producing a pigment that gives our hair its colour, we start experiencing grey hair. These cells need Vitamin B12 to produce the hair pigment. If we suffer from vitamin B12, we experience premature greying. Premature greying can also happen due to medical conditions like thyroid or anaemia. Besides taking a balanced diet, amla can also stop premature greying of hair. Mix a little amla juice with a little almond oil and massage on your scalp. Leave it for 2-3 hours and wash it off with a mild shampoo.

Amla fights dandruff

Dandruff can be treated only by eliminating the facilitators and catalysts. Seborrheic dermatitis is an itchy, red rash with white or yellow flakes. It is linked to a fungus called Malassezia, which is found on the scalp and they feast on oils secreted by our hair follicles and affect our scalp. When the fungi become too active, it leads to dandruff. Amla can effectively treat dandruff. Mix equal amounts of shikakai and amla powder and add curd to it. Massage this paste gently on your scalp and leave it for 30 minutes. Then shampoo your hair. Apply this once a week.

Amla is a good cleanser

Amla has anti-microbial properties that keeps hair odour at bay. It also removes germs sticking on our hair. Amla juice can clean the scalp effectively. It also makes the hair shiny. The antioxidants in amla protect our hair from damages caused due to dust, pollution, smoke, etc.

How do you use amla in your hair care?

For your hair care, amla can be used as oil or powder or juice. These can either be bought from the market or you can make them at home.

Amla oil: Take a few amlas, boil them, de-seed them and then dry them. Take coconut oil and add the dried amla pieces in it. Heat them together for about 20 minutes and allow the concoction to cool down. Then store in a jar. Alternatively, you can add amla juice to coconut oil.

A study found that topical application of amla oil increases the rate of hair growth. The researchers believe this is because of amla’s high concentration of vitamin E that supports healthy circulation. Applying amla oil promotes healing and cell regeneration in a given area.

Amla powder: Cut a few amla pieces and dry them in the sun. Grind them into a fine powder and store in a jar. Whenever you want to use, mix it with your oil or with natural ingredients and massage your hair.

A study found that amla powder was effective in stimulating hair growth. Another study in 2017 found that amla powder stimulates hair growth among people who experience hair loss.

Amla juice: Take a few amlas and cut them into small pieces and add water to it. Put them in a juicer and extract the juice.

Drinking amla juice can help immensely. It is not only a detox drink but also full of vitamin C, iron and other nutrients that purify the blood, make your body toxin free, and in turn enhance hair growth
